In the midst of this chaotic world, sometimes we drift away from ourselves.
Chasing success, chasing people, chasing goals.
Introverts very nature is to think. Explore. Self-actualize.
But in this journey sometimes we may take the wrong course.
We keep on adding layers after layers.
Layers of opinions, advice, suggestions, tips, hacks, and motivation.
And then one day, you find yourself staring at the ceiling at 2 a.m., wondering ,
“I don’t even know myself anymore.”
Because you lost what was real inside you. Your essence. Your being.
And today we’ll discuss how to connect back to that purity inside and become whole again.
The Void
We all have a void inside us. Eternal emptiness.
Like a pot, which is made out of clay but is only useful because of the empty space inside it.
It makes no difference whether it’s made of gold, silver, or diamonds, without its emptiness, it’s useless.
In the same way, our being contains emptiness. Without this emptiness, we are useless too.
It’s this emptiness that makes us climb mountains, run businesses, and chase lovers. We have a very strong need to fill this emptiness.
So we try everything that can help us escape. Anything that can stop this feeling of emptiness.
And in this process of trying… we drift too far away.
We develop our choice of drug. The route to escape in the world of opposites.
Food or fitness.
Drugs or meditation.
Bars or churches.
They may look very different. You may even favor one over the other. But at their very root, they’re the same. Two ends of the same stick.
Two different ways to achieve the same goal.
And you wouldn’t need a thing once you step into this void. See it. Understand it. Know it to its deepest end.
Step into the Void
There is a saying in Zen,
“Before you’re enlightened, rivers are rivers and mountains are mountains. When you start meditating, rivers are no longer rivers and mountains are no longer mountains. And when you attain enlightenment, rivers are rivers and mountains are mountains again.”
The Zen monks were very wise people. They were experts at subtly putting lifetimes of wisdom into the most common words.
When you were born, you were whole. That emptiness was completely filled with the present.
No past. No future. No anxiety about what’s next, what’s next.
You spent every waking hour fully connected to the present moment.
This is the time the Zen monks called ‘before enlightenment’.
But then, life happens. You gain “self-consciousness”.
The illusion that you are someone, or even worse, that you have to become someone.
And that day marks the beginning of our suffering on this planet.
You start searching. Questioning. Contemplating.
What am I supposed to do with my life?
What’s my purpose?
How can I become rich?
How can I attract that person?
Why can’t I be like that person?
What should I eat?
Where should I live?
What’s the secret of longevity?
And it goes on and on and on.
Never stops. Not even for an hour.
You’re always thinking. Chasing. Doing something.
And in the middle of this chaos, you forget who you are.
This is the time the Zen monks call ‘when you start meditating’.
But then one day, you wake up.
You finally run out of questions. You finally realize all the answers are false. You finally understand that there is no end to your mind’s desires.
And then you finally ask yourself the most important question:
“WHO AM I?”
And this is the time the Zen monks call ‘after enlightenment’.
When the rivers are rivers and the mountains are mountains again.
When you take a step inward. When you start seeing things the way they are.
When you know that all your questions stem from answers you already have.
All you needed to do was stare into the void.
Rest in the Void
The great Indian philosopher Osho once said,
“You cannot destroy inner emptiness. It is your very being. You can cover it with things, but sooner or later you will have to encounter it. And it is better if you encounter it sooner.”
Sit with that inner space. That inner emptiness. That inner void.
Experience it. Feel it. Let it seep into your whole body.
Rest in the void.
Emptiness is your soul’s food.
Let your soul feed on it. Drench in it.
It will heal you.
It will destroy your anxiety.
It will answer all your questions.
It will help you overcome your fears.
It will help you discover who you are.
It will show you your true self.
That void is where you come face-to-face with your true self.
It removes all layers of illusion and uncovers who you are.
A cosmic traveler in a sack of blood and bones.
